Do you ever play the game of what if…?
What else would you do if you didn’t do what you are doing now? What other careers would you have? I vaguely remember all of the different occupations that I would list when I played this game of “what if” many years ago. Surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, a majority of those “other” jobs I listed, I have somehow managed to manifest and have added them to this continual resume of life.

I wanted to be a designer. A fashion designer, specifically. My mom did not agree with that career choice so I relented. I became a lighting designer instead. I know…I was still a designer.

I wanted to be a professional photographer. I just went out and did it and I’ve been a professional photographer for the last ten years and still am one.

Creative director, curator, art gallery director, writer all made the list of alternative occupations. Lord , behold, I’ve made myself into those things.

I am starting to feel like the Universe is listening; my wish is its command.

WOW. That is quiet amazing isn’t it?

What if that is all it took? All you have to do is stand up and say, this is what I want. I wish for this experience and the opportunity to do X,Y and Z. Drop your copy of The Secret and all the visual manifestation exercises for a moment. What if all you had to do is have the courage to stand up and declare it. No excuses as to why it can’t be. Just declare what you would like to be.

Okay, I will go first. I would like to add the following experiences and occupations to my current job titles over the next 5 years:

Photojournalist — long term documentary photographer (with more than one ongoing project) and a conflict photographer
Advocate for Change (something involving working with developing nations and NGOs)
UN Good Will Ambassador
A published author on The New York Times Best Seller List
Participant of The Mongol Rally
A C-Level Executive in a company other than my own
A Serious Travel Writer on the caliber of Paul Theroux
A Home Owner

Now its your turn. What would you like to be?
