We are usually in the state of wanting, needing, desiring.

Wanting, needing, desiring of many a thing… Love, Money, Time, Vacation, Escape, A New Job, A Drink, A Slice of Cake, A Movie to Distract You, Freedom, Solace, A Hug, A Friend, A Good Book to Read, A Smoke, Sex…. something and everything.

Do you ever notice those rare moments when you are neither needing nor wanting?

You are not in excess of any one thing nor are you in lack. Nothing about the actual reality of your life has changed. You might still not have the love, money, sex, job, friendship you crave, desire and need. Nothing of your reality has actually changed; yet somehow, in that moment, you want for nothing.

You are in neutral.

As a general principal, I don’t believe one should approach life from a state of neutral, after all, “you can’t be neutral on a moving train.”*

Yet I think these moments, when your heart feels content and you want for nothing, are extremely important. The next time you find yourself in this moment of neither wanting nor needing, may I suggest you relish it. Breathe in this moment.
Remember this place of contentment and let it be your baseline, let this be the place to which you return.

When you find yourself in these moments, stop, inhale, and say, “I’m all right” and stay in that moment for as long as you can.

….then carry that feeling with you when you get back on the moving train.
