Back in the market in Fez, there was a butcher shop that sold camel meat. There were two camel heads hung up in the shop, one outside and another inside the shop. I work around the head for a few moments and frame up a few shots. When I first approached the shop it was the boy who was sitting in the butcher stall that grabbed my attention. It took me a few minutes to even register the camel head hanging down.

Tour groups were coming through the market and the guide would point out the head, people would grab quick snaps of it, the brave ones would stand next to the head and pose for a picture. I stood there for a while just watching. For one, the tour groups were in my way, two, I wanted to see if I can get a different shot now that there is this added element of interest. I thought it was funny no one in the tour groups looked up at the head enough to notice that it is only 2/3 of the head and neck, that the last 1/3 was cut cleanly off. Which means if you are standing underneath the head, you can look up and have a clear shot of his brain.

I sat down in the stall across from the butcher shop, had some b’sara soup for breakfast (not my favorite thing, it left a bitter taste in the back of my throat) and watched the shop and the ongoing. The camel head was so fresh that his nose started to run. Through the course of my breakfast the snot got longer and longer. The butcher has now returned and is talking with a someone. Finally, at one point, the butcher asked the guy he was conversing with to blow the camel’s nose as the snot was about the run past the camel’s head.

The guy took a piece of paper and wiped the snot from the camel’s nose!!!

The camel head was gone by evening time.

I wonder who bought it, how much does it cost and what do you with it? Do you roast it like a goat head or….? Does anyone know?
